Pop als zelfstandig genre binnen de popmuziek is eigenlijk een kunstmatige categorie. Het omvat alles wat buiten de andere popsoorten valt, maar bezit daarmee toch min of meer eigen kenmerken. In pop ligt de nadruk op het liedje. Compositie, melodie en productie zijn belangrijker dan stijl en inhoud. Pop ligt goed in het gehoor en spreekt idealiter een massapubliek aan. Onder haar beoefenaars treffen we dan ook veel hitmakers aan, uiteenlopend van The Beatles tot Michael Jackson, en van Simon & Garfunkel tot de Spice Girls.
The French song, also called 'chanson'. Text is at least as important as music and reveals the French soul: romantic, impulsive and a touch of nostalgia. The current chanson originated at the beginning of the twentieth century from older song forms, some of which date back to the Middle Ages. Icons that give colour to the chanson are the fragile Edith Piaf, the mustachioed George Brassens, the Armenian immigrant son Charles Aznavour and the Belgian Jacques Brel. Johnny Hallyday mixes the chanson with rock-'n-roll while professional provocateur Serge Gainsbourg fills his chansons with spicy lyrics and influences from beat, rock and reggae. In the Netherlands, the chanson reaches its peak in the seventies when beautiful men like Julien Clerc, Joe Dassin and Dave score summer hits with smooth pop-chansons. more
Rock is een algemene term voor alle popmuziek die in het verlengde ligt van de oorspronkelijke rock-‘n-roll: stoere muziek met een opstandig, tegendraads karakter en gitaar, bas en drums als voornaamste instrumentarium. Stijl, imago en inhoud zijn belangrijke onderscheidende factoren. Rockmuziek maakt vrijwel exclusief gebruik van vierkwartsmaat en elektrische versterking en ontwikkelde zich in de jaren zestig via stijlen als beat, surf en psychedelica tot latere vormen als hardrock/metal, progressive rock, punk en alternative rock. Een bijzondere vermelding verdient AOR (adult oriented rock), de stroming waarin bands zorgvuldig de muzikale kenmerken van ‘classic rock bands’ cultiveren, wat ten koste gaat van het rebelse karakter. Die combinatie maakt het tot ideale radiomuziek en AOR-bands als Chicago, Boston, Toto, Styx, Heart en Fleetwood Mac scoren in de jaren zeventig dan ook enorme hits.
