The dance music of the seventies and early eighties, born out of a cross-pollination of funk and Philly-soul in particular. Disco is the first type of music specifically aimed at dance audiences. It is characterized by a monotonous, hypnotic and driving beat with a leading role for bass and hi-hat. Also the synthesizer is often important, as in the very recognizable productions of Giorgio Moroder. The genre first appeared in the American gay scene. On the basis of artists like Barry White and Donna Summer ('The Queen Of Disco') disco moved towards the mainstream. The soundtrack of the Saturday Night Fever (1977) came out at the height of the craze. Disco remained popular in Europe, especially thanks to German (Frank Farian) and Italian (Giorgio Moroder) producers. The Italians also enrich the disco world with the smooth italo-variant. The influence of disco artists on contemporary dance music is still present. Once in a while disco even makes a comeback as a dominant pop genre. more
